What Is Feng Shui? 6 practical tips to utilize your space using the Eastern philosophy

Chances are, you’ve probably heard someone use the words ‘feng shui’ at some point. The Chinese form of philosophy has been around for thousands of years and in more recent times has become incredibly popular in the Western world.

But what is Feng Shui, and how can it apply practically to you and your everyday life?

In addition to core tenents of interior design like comfort and aesthetics, incorporating feng shui into your interior design choices will place an emphasis on physical and mental health, success and healthy relationships. Feng shui is often referred to as ‘the art of placements’, and in simple terms it is about finding the ideal placement of the items around your house to maximise the flow of “Chi”, or energy.

If that all sounds a bit scary, don’t worry! Although feng shui is often dismissed as pseudo-science today, appropriate use of colour, light & furniture placement can all help build levels of harmony and energy flow around any room, and many will appreciate that these factors actually do impact the ‘feel’ or ambiance of any room.

Interior spaces which are designed with feng shui principles in mind can be much more pleasant to live in, and with that in mind here are our six most practical and applicable tips for using feng shui to improve your home.

1. Make sure your living room furniture faces a door and is against a wall

Having your furniture against a wall will create breathing room in your interior. Furthermore, try to place additional items such as lounge chairs and coffee tables in spots which will be most conductive to conversation and avoid harsh angles; the goal is to improve the flow of energy.

2. Avoid electrical components in your sleeping space

Avoid electrical items such as televisions or computers in the bedroom if at all possible. Alternatively, try to keep them separate from your sleeping space by placing them far away from the bed itself. This will create a more calming energy and allow for more restful sleep.

3. Try to avoid the cramp

Too much clutter can prevent energy from flowing and also clutters your brain. A clean space will make you feel like you have room to breathe and will help you clear your head. Plenty of storage space will make it easier for you to clear away the mess when it starts building up.

4. Colour your rooms appropriately

One of the most easily noticeable elements of any rooms is the colour scheme. By coordinating your colours while being mindful of the effect & atmosphere you want to create, you will find the energy of your home becomes much more harmonised. For example, try using red elements in rooms you want to energize such as kitchens and living spaces, and use hues of green and blue to conjure a restful, calming energy in the bedrooms. If you have or are planning on having a home office, try using earth tones such as soft yellow and green to create a stable, centred effect.

5. Add a natural element

Try decorating each room in the house with at least one houseplant. Not only do they improve the energy, they also naturally improve health and help purify the air. If you’re so inclined, you could also try making use of crystals to create a similar purifying effect and give your home a more spiritual vibe.

6. Make sure air and light can get in

Finally, air & light are the key components right at the very heart of feng shui, and they must be allowed in. The combination of natural sunlight and air will bring in an energy of rejuvenation. Try opting for large windows, skylights and make sure your window dressing and curtains are just right (sheer window coverings are a good choice) to strike the perfect balance between allowing light in and preventing energy from escaping.
